Seam bowling is pace bowling in which the ball's raised seam contacts the pitch and deviates — either towards off stump or towards leg stump — after landing. Unlike swing (movement in the air), seam movement happens at the moment of pitch contact and is therefore harder for the batter to anticipate. On green, damp or freshly prepared pitches, even moderate-pace bowlers can be devastatingly effective through seam movement alone.
The Seam and Why It Matters
A cricket ball has a prominent raised seam that runs around its equator. When the ball pitches with the seam upright, the seam acts like a knife edge on the surface — the angle at which the seam strikes the pitch determines whether the ball goes straight on or deviates. Even a few degrees of seam angle at contact can produce 10–15 cm of deviation, which at 140 km/h is enough to beat an inside edge, take the outside edge, or beat the bat entirely.
Seam Bowling Grip
- Index finger and middle finger: placed on top of the ball, one on each side of the seam (or both on the seam for maximum seam contact).
- Thumb underneath: sits below the seam on the smooth side of the ball — supporting the upright seam position.
- Ring and little fingers: curled on the inside — they do not exert significant pressure on the ball.
- Grip pressure: firm but not crushing — too tight reduces wrist snap; too loose lets the seam wobble at release.

Conditions that Favour Seam
- Green pitches: grass covering creates a soft surface that the seam grips and deviates off.
- Damp pitches: moisture softens the surface slightly, increasing the seam's ability to bite.
- Hard, dry pitches: the seam can skid through faster but deviation is less — bounce replaces seam.
- Drop-in pitches: can have varying surface hardness; seam movement unpredictable.
- Early morning conditions: dew or overnight moisture on the surface helps seam movement in the first hour.
Bowling a Seam Delivery
- Grip: seam upright, fingers above, thumb below.
- Run-up: smooth, gathering pace without disrupting the seam position.
- Gather: at the crease, coil the body side-on to maximise rotation.
- Release: bowl through the action — do not roll the fingers as in spin. The seam should leave the hand still upright.
- Follow-through: full follow-through, pointing the bowling hand towards the target.
