The slower ball — any delivery bowled 20-35kph below a bowler's normal pace — is cricket's most important death-bowling variation in T20 and ODI cricket. When a batsman has committed their footwork to an expected fast delivery and the ball arrives late, they swing through empty air, mis-time to a fielder, or produce a top edge. The off-cutter, leg-cutter, knuckle ball, back-of-hand delivery, and palm ball are the five main types. Types of Slower Balls'

The feel: the ball rolls over the first finger rather than being flicked with the wrist. Back-of-Hand and Palm Ball Variations'

The back-of-hand delivery: held with the back of the hand facing the batsman at release (wrist pronated fully inward), the ball is pushed out of the back of the hand rather than the fingers. This removes all wrist-snap from the delivery, reducing pace by 25-35kph and imparting reverse spin on the ball (so it spins in the opposite direction to the bowler's normal seam-side on). The back-of-hand is visually distinctive — the palm of the hand, facing the batsman at release, can be a tell for experienced batsmen who spot it. Jofra Archer (England) and Hardik Pandya (India) use the back-of-hand delivery as a surprise weapon. The palm ball: the ball is held deep in the palm of the hand (not the fingertips), reducing the grip force and removing finger action at release — the ball dribbles out slowly with minimal snap.
