Wrist spinners (leg-spinners) generate rotation primarily from the wrist position at release rather than finger action. The ball sits in the cup of the hand; the wrist rotates dramatically at the point of release — for a right-arm leg-spinner, the wrist rotates from facing the batsman to pointing to the sky, imparting rotation that spins the ball from leg to off (turning away from a right-handed batsman after pitching). The dramatically rotated wrist is visible in slow-motion footage of leg-spinners — it is the opposite of the finger-spinner's stable-wrist technique.

Control and Variation Trade-offs

Finger spin is more controllable and more consistent than wrist spin — the mechanical action is simpler (rolling fingers over the ball) and the spinner can adjust the amount of spin and the ball's direction with small finger-position changes. Wrist spin requires a more complex coordinated movement (arm swing plus wrist rotation happening simultaneously) that is harder to repeat consistently. This is why finger spinners bowl fewer wides, have lower economy rates in Tests, and can bowl very long spells without loss of direction — and why wrist spinners are more expensive (more wides, more loose balls) but produce more unplayable deliveries. Both types of spin are more effective on surfaces that assist turn — dry, dusty tracks where the ball bites into the surface on pitching rather than skidding through. A batsman who can off-spin naturally will simply not have the wrist mechanics to leg-spin to professional standards.

Why is leg-spin considered harder to bat against than off-spin?
