What Is the Spirit of Cricket?

The Spirit of Cricket is a set of ethical principles that go beyond the written laws of the game. Since 2000, the MCC has included a formal Preamble to the Laws of Cricket that articulates these principles — placing responsibility on captains to ensure the game is played with respect, sportsmanship, and fairness.

The MCC Preamble

The Preamble states that cricket belongs to all who play it and that the game's spirit should unite players of all backgrounds. Its core principles include: respect for opponents, respect for the umpires, care of the pitch and playing conditions, and not seeking to exploit the laws unfairly.

Key Principles

  • Respect opponents and umpires at all times
  • Accept the umpire's decision — do not show dissent
  • Do not abuse, demean, or verbally intimidate opponents
  • Do not tamper with the ball or conditions
  • Walk when you know you are out (a matter of personal conscience)
  • Recall an opponent dismissed by an illegitimate delivery

Spirit vs Laws

The Spirit of Cricket exists alongside but separate from the Laws. An action can be entirely within the Laws yet still be considered contrary to the Spirit. The Mankad dismissal — running out a non-striker backing up — is legal but was long considered unsporting. Modern interpretations have been more accepting of it as a legitimate tactical play.

The Spirit of Cricket is enforced not through fines alone but through social norms — the cricket community's expectations of how the game should be played.

Famous Spirit Controversies

The 1981 ODI Underarm Incident — in which Australia bowled an underarm delivery to prevent New Zealand scoring a six off the last ball — was legal but widely condemned as contrary to the Spirit. The Sandpaper Gate of 2018 violated both the law and the Spirit. The Mankad debate has shifted toward acceptance as a legitimate part of the game.

Captains' Responsibility

The Preamble explicitly places primary responsibility on the captains of both sides. A captain is expected to ensure that play is conducted in accordance with the Laws and within the Spirit — intervening if teammates behave inappropriately.

Calling Back a Wrongly Dismissed Batter

A batter is given out LBW off a delivery that clearly hit the bat first. The fielding captain, aware of this, withdraws the appeal and recalls the batter. This exemplifies the Spirit — choosing fairness over tactical advantage.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Spirit of Cricket enforceable?

Not legally. The Spirit is a set of ethical guidelines in the Preamble to the Laws. Violations can result in ICC Code of Conduct charges, but the Spirit itself is primarily enforced through social norms and the cricket community's expectations.

What is the MCC Preamble?

The MCC Preamble is a statement of principles included in the Laws of Cricket since 2000. It outlines the Spirit of Cricket — the ethical expectations placed on all participants — beyond what the Laws themselves can mandate.
