How to play the straight drive — the purest form of bat-and-ball cricket, hit between mid-on and mid-off along the ground straight back at the bowler.
The straight drive is hit between mid-on and mid-off, directly back down the ground or slightly off-centre. It is often considered the most technically pure shot in cricket — a full straight bat swing through a full delivery on or close to the stumps.
When to Play the Straight Drive
- Full delivery on or close to middle or off stump.
- Ball not swinging or seaming significantly.
- When mid-off and mid-on are pushed back — the gap is wide.
- Against spinners on flat pitches when the ball is tossed up invitingly.
How to Play the Straight Drive
- Front foot strides toward the pitch of the ball down the pitch.
- Bat swings in a completely straight arc — no rotation through the line.

The Straight Drive Against Spin
The straight drive is particularly effective against spin bowling as it can hit the ball before it turns.
