Cricket Strike Rate: Batting and Bowling Strike Rates Explained

Strike rate measures scoring speed for batsmen and wicket frequency for bowlers. This guide explains both types of cricket strike rate, how to calculate them, what good strike rates look like, and how they differ across Test, ODI, and T20 cricket.

Cricket has two completely different 'strike rates' — one for batting and one for bowling. Batting strike rate measures how quickly a batsman scores (runs per 100 balls). Bowling strike rate measures how often a bowler takes wickets (balls per wicket). Both statistics reveal something fundamental about a player's contribution, and both must be understood in context — an excellent batting strike rate in T20 cricket would be poor in Test cricket.

Batting Strike Rate

Batting Strike Rate = (Runs Scored ÷ Balls Faced) × 100. A batsman who scores 50 runs from 40 balls has a strike rate of 125 — meaning they score 125 runs per 100 balls faced. In T20 cricket, a strike rate above 140 is excellent; below 110 is slow for a top-order batsman. In ODIs, 90-100 is considered good. In Test cricket, strike rates vary enormously by role: openers might strike at 45-55, aggressive middle-order batsmen at 65-80.

Virender Sehwag had a Test batting strike rate of 82.23 — the highest ever for any batsman to score more than 8,000 Test runs. His approach — treating Test cricket like ODI batting — generated extraordinary run rates that collapsed match timelines.

Bowling Strike Rate

Bowling Strike Rate = Total Balls Bowled ÷ Wickets Taken. A bowler who takes 50 wickets from 1,000 balls has a bowling strike rate of 20 — they take a wicket every 20 balls. In Test cricket, a bowling strike rate below 50 is excellent (one wicket per 50 deliveries or fewer). Below 40 is outstanding. In T20 cricket, bowling strike rates are much harder to compare — the format's short innings compresses the data.

Strike Rate vs. Average vs. Economy

The three bowling statistics — average, economy, and strike rate — measure different things. Average = runs conceded per wicket (quality of wickets). Economy = runs conceded per over (cost per ball). Strike rate = balls bowled per wicket (frequency of wickets). A bowler can have a good economy but poor strike rate (containing but not taking wickets), or an excellent strike rate but poor economy (taking wickets but conceding many runs between them).
