What makes sub-continent pitches different?

Pitches in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh are typically prepared from dry, red clay or hard soil that does not retain moisture well. Unlike English or New Zealand pitches (which hold overnight moisture and help seam movement), sub-continent pitches are often bone dry and hard at the start. As the match progresses, particularly in Test cricket, the surface cracks, crumbles and turns — creating enormous advantages for spin bowlers while pace bowlers find little seam or swing to exploit.

The spin advantage

On a dry, crumbling sub-continent pitch in the third innings of a Test, off-spinners can bowl into crumbling footmarks (rough patches outside the right-hander's off stump created by the bowler's follow-through) for devastating effect. The ball can turn sharply and bounce unpredictably from rough, making every delivery a potential wicket. Home sides in the sub-continent prepare pitches specifically to suit their own spin-heavy attacks — and visiting teams often have limited experience playing on such surfaces.

India have an exceptional Test match home record because of their combination of specialist spinners (Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja) and home pitches tailored to spin. Visiting teams from England, Australia, and South Africa — more used to seaming and swinging conditions — consistently struggle in India even though they are strong at home.

In T20 cricket

In limited-overs cricket, sub-continent pitches can be hard, flat batting surfaces — particularly in India's IPL where grounds are watered and rolled extensively to produce batter-friendly 'roads.' However, early-tournament T20 WC games in India or Pakistan at night can produce dew-affected pitches where the ball slips through the spinner's fingers, making spin bowling less effective. The dew factor is a major tactical consideration in evening matches in the sub-continent.

Batting on day one (before the pitch deteriorates) gives maximum value before cracks develop. A team that bats first builds a total on the best batting surface; the pitch often becomes a 'turner' by days 3–5, which can demolish a second-batting side.

Is sub-continent batting vs pace bowling harder?

Pace bowling on flat sub-continent pitches in Test cricket is often less effective because the surface provides little carry and movement. Batters are comfortable playing off the front foot on flat, even bounce. Pace is more effective when reverse swing with the old ball becomes available.
