How T20 Batting Differs

Traditional cricket batting prioritises defence, shot selection, and patience — qualities essential in Test cricket where a batter may face 200+ balls. T20 batting requires an entirely different mindset: near-constant attack, a limited tolerance for dot balls, and the ability to hit good-length deliveries for boundaries through unconventional means. Modern T20 batters are expected to maintain strike rates above 130, meaning they score 1.3 runs per ball faced — the equivalent of a boundary every 7–8 balls on average.

The Pre-Meditated Shot

In T20 cricket, batters increasingly pre-meditate shots — deciding what to play before the ball is delivered. This involves reading the bowler's typical delivery (length, line, pace) and preparing a specific response. A batter might decide to sweep the off-spinner regardless of delivery; to ramp the fast bowler over the keeper; or to stand outside off stump to make the bowler bowl to different areas. Pre-meditated batting removes the element of surprise from bowling plans and is a significant tactical evolution.

Key T20 Shots

The ramp and scoop: playing the ball over the keeper or backward of square leg off a short-of-a-length delivery. The switch hit and reverse sweep: switching hands just before delivery to play the opposite side. The scoop over fine leg: kneeling and scooping short balls over the fielder. The inside-out cover drive: using the depth of the crease to open the face and drive through cover on the off side. The slog sweep: sweeping a full ball through midwicket or over the top. Each of these shots exploits fielding positions left vacant during powerplay restrictions.

Power Hitting Mechanics

Power hitting in cricket is not purely about strength — it requires precise timing, bat speed, and a willingness to play across the line. The key mechanical elements are: a high bat back-lift to generate swing momentum; a strong bottom hand grip at impact to keep the ball down and generate power; weight transfer through the ball rather than falling away; and follow-through that allows the bat to swing freely. Elite T20 batters like Jos Buttler, Suryakumar Yadav, and Tim David have bat speeds significantly above average, allowing them to clear the boundary on good-length deliveries that traditional batters would simply defend.

Suryakumar Yadav's signature is playing 360° — he can hit the ball in any direction, including behind the stumps on the leg side off good-length deliveries. This makes him almost impossible to set a field for.

The Strike Rate Target

Modern T20 franchise cricket has established approximate strike rate benchmarks by batting position: openers should target 130–150; number three 140–160; middle-order finishers (positions 5–7) should target 150–180+ with the ability to clear the boundary regularly. Number 8 and below are expected to either contribute a quick cameo (30-ball 40) or not. Teams use impact calculators during match preparation to set position-specific strike rate floors and ceiling.
