Tim Southee is New Zealand's most prolific Test wicket-taker, surpassing Sir Richard Hadlee's long-standing record of 431 wickets and continuing to extend the mark. The right-arm fast-medium bowler is a master of swing — both conventional and reverse — and has been central to New Zealand's rise as one of the leading Test nations over the past decade.

Eden Park Magic — 7 for 33 Against Pakistan

Southee's most famous performance came in the 2011 Cricket World Cup at Eden Park, Auckland, where he took 7 for 33 against Pakistan. It remains New Zealand's best bowling figures in World Cup history and one of the most sensational one-day spells ever produced. Southee swung the ball prodigiously in overcast Auckland conditions to dismantle Pakistan's batting.

New Zealand's Record Wicket-Taker

Southee passed Richard Hadlee's Test record of 431 wickets in 2023, becoming New Zealand's all-time leading wicket-taker. Alongside Trent Boult — who retired from international cricket in 2022 — Southee formed one of the most feared new-ball partnerships in world cricket. The two were the engine room of New Zealand's Test bowling attack for nearly a decade.

Batting Lower Order and Match Contributions

Southee is also a capable lower-order batsman who has contributed important runs in Test matches. His century at Old Trafford in 2013 was one of New Zealand's rare batting highlights on that tour. He regularly chips in with the bat at seven or eight, adding balance to the New Zealand lineup.

Captaincy and Leadership

Southee took over the New Zealand Test captaincy following Kane Williamson's step-back in December 2022 and led the team through a transitional period until September 2024, when Tom Latham was appointed as New Zealand's full-time Test captain.
