What Is the T20 Blast?
The Vitality T20 Blast is England and Wales' premier domestic Twenty20 competition, run by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and featuring all 18 first-class county sides. It is the highest-attended domestic cricket competition in England and one of the most-watched T20 leagues outside the IPL and PSL.
Format
The 18 counties are split into two groups — North and South — of nine teams each. Each team plays 14 group-stage games: home and away against each other side in their group. The top four teams from each group qualify for Finals Day, an annual one-day knockout event held at Edgbaston in Birmingham in mid-September.
- Group stage: 14 matches per team (home and away within the group).
- Quarter-finals and semi-finals: contested at Edgbaston on Finals Day.
- Final: the winner of semi-final 1 vs the winner of semi-final 2.

History
The competition launched in 2003 as the Twenty20 Cup, making England the first major cricket board to introduce T20 domestic cricket. Surrey won the inaugural title. The competition was renamed the T20 Blast in 2014 and has carried the Vitality sponsorship title since 2018. Notts Outlaws and Leicestershire Foxes are among the most successful franchises by number of titles.
International Players
Counties can sign overseas players for the T20 Blast under ECB regulations. The competition regularly attracts world-class T20 specialists from the Caribbean, South Asia, and Australia during the English summer. Many IPL franchises specifically look at T20 Blast performances when selecting overseas targets for their auction shortlists.
