The United States has a longer cricket history than almost any other American sport — the first international cricket match ever played was between the USA and Canada in 1844, predating Test cricket by 33 years. Cricket was widely played in colonial America, particularly in New York, Philadelphia, and Boston. The sport fell away after baseball developed in the mid-19th century and dominated American sporting culture through the Civil War era and beyond.

The Philadelphia Cricket Tradition

Philadelphia maintained a cricket tradition long after the rest of America abandoned it. In the early 20th century, Philadelphia toured England and competed against first-class county sides. J.B. King, a Philadelphia medium-fast bowler, was considered one of the best in the world in the early 1900s. The Merion Cricket Club (founded 1865) and Germantown Cricket Club are among the oldest cricket clubs in the Western hemisphere. Philadelphia cricket gradually declined through the 20th century.

The Diaspora Revival

Cricket in America revived in the late 20th century through South Asian, Caribbean, and British immigration. New York City has the largest concentration of cricket players in North America — estimated at 100,000+ active players across Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and New Jersey. Most play on concrete-surface grounds or improvised pitches in city parks, far removed from the sport's traditional grass pitches.

Major League Cricket (MLC): A Professional Framework

Major League Cricket (MLC) launched in July 2023 as the USA's first professional T20 cricket league. It began with six franchises backed by IPL franchise owners: MI New York (Mumbai Indians), LA Knight Riders (KKR), Seattle Orcas, San Francisco Unicorns, Texas Super Kings (CSK), and Washington Freedom. The inaugural season attracted several international stars as marquee signings. The league was specifically designed to grow cricket's American audience and develop local American players.

The 2024 T20 World Cup: A Global Stage

The USA co-hosted the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup alongside the West Indies. Matches were played at brand-new venues including the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, which installed a temporary 34,000-seat venue on a park in Long Island. The USA team themselves qualified and famously defeated Pakistan in the group stage — a result that shocked the cricket world and demonstrated the growth of American cricket. India's matches in New York generated extraordinary demand for tickets, with the market value of India vs Pakistan tickets exceeding Super Bowl prices.
