The Vijay Hazare Trophy

The Vijay Hazare Trophy is India's premier domestic 50-over (List A) competition, named after Vijay Hazare — one of India's greatest pre-independence batsmen and the first Indian to score centuries in both innings of a Test match. The competition has been played since 2002–03 and is contested by all 28 state associations plus railways and services.

VHT Format and Structure

Teams play in five Elite and one Plate group, with the top teams from each group advancing to knockout stages culminating in a final. The VHT is typically played in November–December, after the Irani Cup and before the Ranji Trophy heats up. The 50-over format closely mirrors international ODI conditions, making it the most relevant domestic competition for ODI squad selection.

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) is India's national domestic T20 competition, first played in 2006–07. It is contested in a similar format to the VHT — zonal group stages followed by knockout rounds. Named after Syed Mushtaq Ali — a stylish Holkar and India batsman of the 1930s and 40s who was noted for aggressive scoring — the competition is an important T20I selection pathway.

T20I Selection via SMAT

India's selectors use SMAT performances as a direct T20I selection metric. Players who perform consistently in SMAT — particularly with strike rates above 150 and economy rates below 7 — attract attention. Tilak Varma's SMAT performances in 2022 directly led to his IPL auction value rising, and subsequently to his India T20I debut. The competition thus creates a pipeline: SMAT → IPL franchise interest → national selection.
