The Wagon Wheel in Cricket Explained
The wagon wheel is a fielding and scoring map that plots every shot played by a batter as a line from the middle of the pitch to the boundary — showing where they score their runs.
The wagon wheel is a circular diagram of a cricket ground viewed from above. Each shot played by a batter is plotted as a line (or spoke) radiating from the centre of the pitch to where the ball went. The resulting image looks like the spokes of a wheel — giving the chart its name. It is used by broadcasters, analysts, and coaches to visualise a batter's scoring zones and identify both strengths and weaknesses.
How is it used?
A wagon wheel for a completed innings shows at a glance which areas of the field a batter targeted. A heavily populated off-side with few leg-side spokes shows a batter who drives through the covers and avoids the leg side. A wheel with most spokes toward fine leg and square leg shows a batter who relies on the glance and flick. Broadcasters update the wagon wheel throughout an innings, and it is one of the first graphics shown when a batter reaches a milestone.
How do captains use it?
Before a match, fielding captains review opposing batters' wagon wheels to identify where runs are concentrated and position fielders accordingly. If a batter's wagon wheel shows 40% of runs coming to the cover region, the captain may pack the off side with extra fielders. If a batter rarely scores through long on, that region can be left unguarded (saving a fielder elsewhere). The wagon wheel is the most direct link between pre-match analysis and on-field field placement.
