The Stumping Opportunity Window

A stumping dismissal requires: the ball to pass the bat without contact (or contact that does not result in a catch), the batsman to be out of their crease when the keeper removes the bails, and the keeper to remove the bails before the batsman grounds their bat behind the line. The window between the ball passing the bat and the batsman realising they are exposed and attempting to regain their crease is typically 150-300 milliseconds — the visual processing time for a batsman to register that the ball has passed them, reach the decision to dive back, and initiate the movement. A world-class keeper's stumping action (from glove receipt to bail removal) is approximately 100-120 milliseconds.

Most stumpings against spin bowling occur when the batsman plays a drive that misses the ball (or plays a defensive shot that the spinning ball evades) and their momentum has carried their back foot outside the crease. This allows them to position their gloves approximately where the ball will arrive before it gets there, reducing the glove movement required and shortening the stumping completion time. Research using motion-capture analysis of elite keepers shows they begin shifting glove position before the ball reaches the halfway mark of its flight — pure reaction after release is insufficient for world-class keeping.

Stumping reviews involve two distinct questions: Was the ball received correctly (e.g., did it come off the edge — a caught-behind, not a stumping)? Can a stumping be given if the ball bounces over the stumps?

Yes — if the ball pitches, bounces over the stumps (or around them), and the keeper catches it cleanly, a stumping is possible if the batsman is out of their crease. The ball does not need to pass over the stumps at wicket height — it simply needs to be delivered legally (not a no-ball) and be received by the keeper without first touching the ball above wicket height after it passes the stumps. However, if the ball bounces and rolls along the ground past the stumps, the keeper must gather it cleanly before disturbing the bails for the stumping to count.

Is it a stumping if the keeper's glove hits the stumps accidentally?
