What Is the World Test Championship?

The ICC World Test Championship (WTC) is a two-year championship cycle in which all nine ICC Full Member nations play Test series against each other and accumulate points based on results. At the end of each two-year cycle, the top two teams on the standings meet in a WTC Final, typically played at Lord's Cricket Ground in London. The championship was designed to give Test series more context and meaning than simple bilateral records, creating a unifying narrative across the disparate international fixture list.

How Points Are Calculated

Teams earn points based on match results (12 points for a win, 4 for a draw, 0 for a loss in most series). The standings are measured by Percentage of Available Points (PCT) to account for the fact that not all nations play the same number of Tests in a cycle. A team that wins all five matches of a five-Test series accumulates more points than one that wins all two of a two-Test series, but their PCT may be the same. Rain-affected draws reduce available points and reduce what both teams can earn from that match.

WTC Finals History

The inaugural WTC Final in 2021 at Ageas Bowl, Southampton was won by New Zealand, who defeated India by 8 wickets in a match that required reserve days due to rain. The second WTC Final in 2023 at The Oval was won by Australia, who defeated India by 209 runs — Pat Cummins and Nathan Lyon sharing the wickets in a comprehensive victory. The WTC Final is the only major Test match played at a neutral venue, adding a tournament atmosphere to what is otherwise a bilateral format.
