Dawid Malan: England's Former World No. 1 T20 Batter

Dawid Malan made history in 2017 by becoming the first England batter to reach No. 1 in the ICC T20 International batting rankings. Unlike many of England's T20 players who are associated with explosive, high-strike-rate batting, Malan built his reputation on something different: composure, ratio of runs-to-balls, and the ability to anchor an innings without slowing the scoring rate.

No. 1 T20I Batter

Malan reached world No. 1 in T20I batting rankings in November 2017 after a string of match-winning scores for England. His T20I record at that point was extraordinary — a batting average of over 50, with consistent scores in both home and away matches. He demonstrated that quality, orthodox batting technique could be as effective in T20 cricket as the power-hitting approach.

Batting Style

Malan's T20 batting is based on reading the ball early, minimising risk in the early overs, and accelerating when set. He is a classical left-handed batter who plays through the off side with textbook drives and uses his wrists to play on the leg side with equal facility. His approach is more crafted than explosive — building innings methodically before increasing the tempo.

Test Career

Malan also played Tests for England, scoring 1,078 Test runs at an average of 27.12. His Test career was less consistent than his white-ball record, but he contributed important runs at number five in the batting order. His decision to focus primarily on T20 cricket was vindicated by his ranking achievements.
