Dinesh Chandimal: Sri Lanka's Resilient Wicketkeeper-Captain

Dinesh Chandimal has been one of Sri Lanka's most consistent Test batters and served as captain of the national side across multiple formats. A compact right-handed middle-order batter who also keeps wicket, Chandimal's career spans two distinct phases — an early career as a dynamic limited-overs player and a later transformation into a composed Test-specialist batter.

Test Batting Record

Chandimal has played over 60 Tests, scoring more than 3,500 runs at an average above 40. He is particularly effective in sub-continental conditions — where his ability to play spin is notable — but has also shown the capacity to perform on helpful pitches in England and Australia. His Test career outlasted many of the Sri Lankan batting greats who preceded him.

Captaincy

Chandimal captained Sri Lanka in 22 Tests and multiple ODIs. His captaincy period was challenging — Sri Lanka were going through transition after the retirement of Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara, and other legends. He led with composure and occasionally produced inspired decisions, though Sri Lanka's results were mixed during his tenure.

Ball-Tampering Controversy

Chandimal's captaincy was clouded by a ball-tampering allegation during the 2018 tour of the West Indies. He was found guilty by match referee Javagal Srinath and suspended for two Test matches. Sri Lanka contested the decision but ultimately accepted it, making the incident one of the more complicated disciplinary episodes in recent Asian cricket.
