Erapalli Prasanna: India's Off-Spin Genius

The Off-Spinner Who Mesmerised Batsmen

Erapalli Anantharao Srinivas Prasanna played 49 Tests for India between 1962 and 1978, taking 189 wickets at an average of 30.38. An off-break bowler who gave the ball enormous turn, Prasanna lured batsmen into drives with deceptive flight and then watched the ball rip away. He was perhaps the most attacking spinner of the famous Indian quartet, regularly drawing catches at slip and silly point.

The Difficult Position in the Quartet

Prasanna's career was complicated by having to compete with the other three exceptional spinners — Bedi, Chandrasekhar and Venkataraghavan — for places in the side. India rarely played all four simultaneously; conditions and pitch type determined the selection. Prasanna often found himself the one left out on helpful wickets where a third seamer was preferred, limiting his opportunities despite his obvious class.

Technical Brilliance

What made Prasanna exceptional was his ability to bowl off-spin on pitches that offered little assistance. He used flight rather than bounce, drawing batsmen forward and then past the ball. His loop was generous — not flat like many modern off-spinners — and this invited the drive. When batsmen came forward he could beat them; when they sat back he could bowl them round their legs or find the top of off stump.
