The ICC Cricket World Cup is the premier event in One Day International cricket. Held every four years, it has been the stage for some of cricket's most unforgettable moments — from Kapil Dev's miracle 1983 win to Dhoni's six in 2011, and the tied 2019 final decided by boundaries.

1975 — The first World Cup

The inaugural World Cup was held in England in June 1975. West Indies beat Australia in the final at Lord's. Clive Lloyd scored 102 from 85 balls. The format used 60-over matches with traditional white clothing and red balls.

1983 — Kapil Dev's miracle

India were 100-1 outsiders in 1983. Their captain Kapil Dev played a rescue innings of 175* vs Zimbabwe when India were 17/5. In the final at Lord's, India scored 183 and then bowled the mighty West Indies out for 140. Mohinder Amarnath was the match-winner with bat and ball.

1992 — Pakistan under Imran

The 1992 World Cup in Australia introduced coloured clothing, white balls, and floodlit matches. Pakistan, written off after a poor group stage, won their remaining games and defeated England in the final. Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, and Inzamam-ul-Haq were the stars.

2019 — The tied final

The 2019 final between England and New Zealand at Lord's ended in an extraordinary tie — 241 all out each after 50 overs. A Super Over also tied (15-15). England were then awarded the title because they hit more boundaries during their innings. It remains the most controversial finish in World Cup history.

2023 — Australia win in India

Australia won the 2023 World Cup in India, defeating the hosts 6-wickets in the final in Ahmedabad in front of 130,000 fans. India were unbeaten through the group stage and semi-finals; Australia beat them in the final when Travis Head scored a 137-ball century that turned the match.
