Imran Khan: Pakistan's Greatest All-Rounder and World Cup Captain

Imran Khan is the greatest all-rounder Pakistan has produced and one of the finest in cricket history. As a fast bowler he took 362 Test wickets; as a batter he scored 3,807 Test runs. As captain he achieved the impossible — leading an ageing Pakistan team to the 1992 Cricket World Cup.

Early career and bowling

Born on October 5, 1952, in Lahore, Imran made his debut in 1971 at age 18. Initially he was a tearaway pace bowler without great accuracy. He developed into a complete fast bowler during his years at Worcester and later Sussex in county cricket. His action — side-on with a high arm — produced both outswing and reverse swing at pace.

Captaincy and transformation

Imran was appointed Pakistan captain in 1982. Under his leadership Pakistan became a dominant Test team, winning series in England (1987), India (1987), and the West Indies. He also rebuilt Pakistan's fast bowling culture — identifying and nurturing Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Aqib Javed.

1992 World Cup — 'cornered tigers'

Imran came out of retirement for the 1992 World Cup. Pakistan started disastrously, losing to India and nearly missing the knockout stage. In his pre-semi-final team talk, Imran told his players they were 'cornered tigers' — tigers who fight hardest with their backs to the wall. Pakistan won the semi-final against New Zealand and the final against England in Melbourne. Imran scored 72 and took 1 wicket in the final.

Legacy and politics

Imran used his celebrity to found Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Lahore (1994), one of Pakistan's finest hospitals. He founded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the political party that won the 2018 Pakistani election. He served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022 before being removed in a vote of no confidence. His transition from cricket to politics remains unique in world sport.
