In March 2001, Steve Waugh's Australia were the dominant force in world cricket — unbeaten in 16 consecutive Tests. At Eden Gardens, Kolkata, they enforced the follow-on on India with a first innings lead of 274. India were 232 for 4 in their second innings, still 42 runs away from making Australia bat again, when VVS Laxman joined Rahul Dravid at the crease on the third evening.

Laxman's 281 and the Dravid Partnership

What followed was the greatest partnership in the history of Test cricket in terms of what it achieved. Laxman and Dravid batted together for 376 runs in an unbroken partnership that stretched across most of the fourth day. Laxman scored 281 — a masterpiece of timing, wristwork and attacking intent — while Dravid scored 180, the steelman role of the partnership. India declared on 657 for 7, setting Australia 384 to win.

Harbhajan Singh's Role

Harbhajan Singh took 13 wickets in the match — 7 for 123 in the first innings and 6 for 73 in the fourth innings as Australia chased 384 and were bowled out for 212. His hat-trick in the first innings (dismissing Ponting, Gilchrist and Warne) was the first by an Indian bowler in Test cricket. Without his wickets, India could not have won; Laxman and Dravid's batting had set the scene, but Harbhajan delivered the final act.

The Meaning of the Victory

India's win — following on and winning, only the third instance in Test history — ended Australia's record winning streak and changed the psychological balance of the contest. India won the series 2-1, Waugh's only series defeat as captain of Australia. The match is remembered in India as simply 'Kolkata 2001' — no further explanation required.
