The Indian Premier League — the IPL — is the world's most watched and most valuable T20 cricket league. Launched by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in 2008, it revolutionised cricket by combining the franchise sports model with the T20 format, creating a spectacle that attracts the planet's best players, the biggest Bollywood stars, and hundreds of millions of viewers.
How does the IPL work?
Ten city-based franchises compete over roughly 70 matches played across two months (typically March to May). Every team plays 14 league-stage matches — seven at home, seven away — against all the other nine franchises. The top four teams at the end of the league stage advance to the playoffs.

The system gives the top two teams a second chance — even if they lose Qualifier 1, they get another opportunity via Qualifier 2. The 3rd and 4th placed teams must win the Eliminator just to stay in.
The IPL auction
The IPL auction is one of cricket's most dramatic events. Each franchise has a salary purse (typically ₹90–100 crore) and a squad cap of 25 players (max 8 overseas players per squad, max 4 playing in any XI). Players are auctioned to the highest bidder. Every few years, the BCCI holds a 'mega auction' where all contracts reset and franchises build their squads from scratch — interim years have a 'mini auction' where teams retain most players and fill gaps.
