Jacques Henry Kallis was born in Pinelands, Cape Town on 16 October 1975. The debate about cricket's greatest all-rounder typically names Garfield Sobers — but Kallis's raw statistical combination is arguably unmatched. He scored 13,289 Test runs at 55.37 with 45 centuries and took 292 Test wickets at 32.65. No other player in history comes within 3,000 runs and 100 wickets of both these targets simultaneously.

South Africa's Underpinning

Kallis was the cornerstone of South Africa's batting and bowling attacks for over 18 years. When the batting needed rescuing, Kallis would bat with unyielding technique and patience. When the bowling needed a breakthrough, his disciplined medium-fast bowling could be relied upon. He took 200 ODI wickets and scored over 11,000 ODI runs as well — extraordinary across both formats. South Africa's greatest era of Test cricket, from 1998 to 2012, coincided almost exactly with his prime years.

The 2003 World Cup and ODI Cricket

Kallis was South Africa's most important player through multiple World Cups. His unbeaten century against Zimbabwe in the 2003 World Cup helped South Africa progress, though they famously exited in the Super Six stage. Kallis retired from Test cricket in December 2013 after South Africa's tour of India, having played 166 Tests. He also scored over 11,000 runs in ODIs and took 273 wickets in that format.
