Anderson's career is built on the mastery of conventional swing — particularly outswing that moves away from right-handed batters through the air. In English conditions, with a Dukes ball, his control is almost supernatural: he can land the ball on the same spot for six consecutive deliveries while the seam swings it in any direction. His inswing also proved devastating against batters seeking to drive on the off side.

Anderson and Broad

The Anderson-Broad partnership became England's greatest bowling combination. Together they have taken over 1,200 Test wickets — the most by any bowling pair in Test history. They complemented each other perfectly: Anderson's swing and seam from one end, Broad's bounce and skidthrough from the other. Both retired at the top — Broad in 2023, Anderson in 2024.
