Joseph Edward Root (born 1990, Sheffield, Yorkshire) surpassed Alastair Cook's record of 12,472 Test runs in 2023 to become England's all-time highest Test run-scorer. By the end of 2024 he had scored over 13,000 runs at an average above 50 — the only England batter ever to average 50+ across 100+ Tests. He is part of the 'Fab Four' alongside Kohli, Smith, and Williamson.
Technical Excellence: The Whip Through Mid-Wicket
Root's technical signature is his ability to play the same ball in multiple ways depending on the match situation. His front foot is planted firmly; his head is still; his bat swing is high and controlled. His most distinctive shot is the whip through mid-wicket — taking a ball on middle stump and angling it across the field. Against spin, he uses his feet effectively and has developed a reverse sweep that he deploys when the field is set against his conventional game.
2021: The Year of Transformation
Root's 2021 was one of the great individual Test batting seasons. He scored 1,708 Test runs in the calendar year — the most by any England batter in a single year. Captaincy and Bazball
Root captained England in 64 Tests (2017–2022), winning 27 and losing 26. The record was unremarkable given the talent available, and Root resigned after losing 2-0 at home to New Zealand in 2022. When Stokes took over and Bazball began, Root — freed from captaincy responsibilities — averaged over 60 under Stokes. The lesson: captaincy had been restricting his batting.
