Jofra Archer: England's Fastest and Most Exciting Bowler

Jofra Archer is England's fastest and perhaps most exciting cricketer of the modern era. A Barbados-born right-arm fast bowler averaging around 90-93mph, he debuted for England in 2019 and immediately became indispensable across all formats. But injury has repeatedly interrupted his career, making his brilliant performances all the more precious.

2019 debut and World Cup

Archer made his international debut for England in May 2019. He was added to England's World Cup squad at the last minute. In the World Cup final he bowled the Super Over against New Zealand — the most pressured single over in cricketing history. He conceded 15 but England won on boundary count. The final made Archer an instant legend.

2019 Ashes — the Steve Smith incident

In the second Ashes Test at Lord's, Archer struck Steve Smith on the neck with a 92mph bouncer. Smith was felled and eventually left the field. When Archer bowled at him in a subsequent Test, he hit him again. The battles between Archer and Smith became the defining contest of the series.

Injury toll

Archer's career has been interrupted by a stress fracture in his right elbow (2021), a right elbow operation, and then a second stress fracture requiring further surgery. He missed the 2021/22 Ashes entirely and large portions of 2022 and 2023. His availability has been so uncertain that England planned both with and without him.

The Hundred and T20 record

Archer has been a dominant bowler in The Hundred and the IPL when fit. His death-bowling accuracy — combining pace with late movement — makes him one of the premier T20 bowlers globally. In The Hundred's early seasons he was the tournament's most feared bowler.

Return and future

Archer returned to international cricket in 2024 and showed his full ability before again picking up injury. England regard him as potentially their greatest bowling asset — but managing his workload against the demands of modern cricket's crowded calendar remains a significant challenge.
