Jos Buttler Explained: England's Explosive Wicketkeeper-Batter

Jos Buttler (born 8 September 1990 in Taunton, Somerset) is a right-handed wicketkeeper-batter — formerly captain of England's limited-overs teams (resigned February 2025, succeeded by Harry Brook). He is one of T20 cricket's most feared power-hitters — an exceptionally aggressive middle-order or opening batter who plays shots that few other batters attempt, including reverse sweeps, ramp shots, and upper cuts at full pace that regularly clear the boundary.

Power Hitting and Ramp Shots

Buttler's batting is defined by his power and his willingness to play unconventional shots — particularly his ramp and scoop shots that redirect pace bowling over the wicketkeeper and fine leg. His ramp shots are technically demanding: the batter must wait until the last moment, position the bat to deflect a full-length or yorker delivery over the fielder behind the stumps, and time it without playing the ball onto the stumps or into their body. At pace bowling above 140 km/h, the technical requirements of this shot are extraordinary. Buttler executes it consistently, making him almost impossible to bowl to when in this mode.

England T20 World Cup Captain

Buttler captained England to the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup title in Australia — England's first men's T20 World Cup since 2010. His captaincy during the 2022 tournament demonstrated tactical flexibility: rotating bowlers across different powerplay and death situations, adjusting batting orders based on match conditions, and creating a team environment that allowed aggressive batting throughout the lineup. England's victory under Buttler was comprehensive — they were dominant across the knockout rounds and defeated Pakistan in the final.

Wicketkeeping

Buttler is a high-quality wicketkeeper as well as a world-class batter — his glove work behind the stumps is clean and reliable, and his stumpings (particularly off spin bowling in the powerplay, standing up to the stumps) have been decisive in multiple matches. England's selection of a wicketkeeper-batter who is exceptional at both functions is one of the competitive advantages in limited-overs cricket: a team with a reliable keeper who can also score 80–120 runs at a strike rate of 150+ has a structural advantage over a team whose keeper contributes only with the gloves.

Test Cricket and Withdrawal

Buttler withdrew from Test cricket in 2022 — citing workload management and a desire to focus on white-ball cricket and franchise commitments. His decision reflected the growing financial and scheduling tension between England's central contract obligations and the franchise T20 market's demands. England subsequently used Ben Foakes as their Test wicketkeeper and have not recalled Buttler to the Test setup, allowing him to focus his energy entirely on the white-ball international cricket and franchise T20 where his batting has the most impact.
