The Kookaburra cricket ball — manufactured by Kookaburra Sport in Australia — is used in One Day Internationals, T20 Internationals, and Test matches across Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, and Afghanistan. It is the world's most widely used international cricket ball and the only ball approved for all ICC white-ball competitions.

Construction and seam characteristics

A Kookaburra ball has a machine-stitched seam — the four raised rows of stitches that run around the equator of the ball. This machine stitching makes the Kookaburra seam harder and more pronounced than that of a Dukes ball (which is hand-stitched) but means the seam deteriorates more quickly. In Test cricket conditions, the Kookaburra's seam typically remains useful for the first 20–30 overs before it flattens and the ball begins to swing reverse instead of conventional.

Conventional swing with the Kookaburra

A new Kookaburra swings conventionally when the bowler presents the shiny side of the ball to the airflow on one side and the rougher seam side to the other, creating an aerodynamic pressure difference that curves the ball in the air. However, Kookaburra balls are noted by bowlers as being harder to swing for longer than Dukes balls — the lacquer wears off faster, and the ball goes soft quicker on hard Australian and South African pitches. This is a key reason why spinner-dominated bowling strategies are common in Kookaburra-ball Tests: seamers extract less movement after the first session.

The white Kookaburra in limited-overs cricket

In white-ball cricket (ODI and T20), a white Kookaburra ball is used (two balls in ODI cricket, one from each end, replaced at the 34-over mark). White Kookaburras deteriorate faster than red ones because the dye used in white lacquering wears more quickly. This means the white ball often begins reverse swinging earlier — a critical tactical element that bowlers can exploit in the final 10 overs of an ODI when the pitch has also dried and slowed.
