LBW Rules Explained — How LBW Works in Cricket (with DRS)

Leg before wicket — LBW — is the dismissal that decides more matches than any other single rule and confuses more new fans than any other detail of cricket. The principle is simple: if your body is in the way of a ball that would have hit the stumps, you're out. The detail is where it gets interesting.

The umpire's three-part test

For an LBW appeal to be upheld, three questions all have to be answered the same way.

  1. Pitching — where the ball bounced. If the ball pitched outside leg stump, it's never out, no matter what happens next.
  2. Impact — where the ball hit the batter. If it hit the batter outside the line of off stump AND the batter was offering a shot, not out.
  3. Hitting — would the ball have gone on to hit the stumps? If yes, out. If clearly missing, not out.
All three steps have to support the appeal. Fail any one and the batter survives.

Why the off-stump line matters

Impact outside the line of off stump while playing a shot protects batters from being given out by deflections of a defensive bat-pad. It rewards batters who play at the ball; it doesn't reward those who leave a ball that would have hit the stumps and try to pad it away.

DRS and the three lines

Television broadcasts overlay three lines on the LBW replays:

  • Red — pitched outside leg stump (never out).
  • Yellow — impact zone outside off stump (not out if offering a shot).
  • Hawk-Eye projected path — green if missing stumps, red if hitting.

When DRS is used, ball-tracking software predicts where the ball would have gone if the batter weren't in the way. The umpire's on-field decision stands unless the technology shows a clear error.

Umpire's call — the part everyone argues about

Hawk-Eye projects a path, but no ball-tracking is perfect. The ICC accepts a margin of uncertainty — currently half a ball-width on impact and hitting. If the ball-tracking projection is within that margin of clipping the stumps, the on-field decision stands.

This is 'umpire's call'. The same projection can give one batter out and another not out depending on what the umpire originally signalled, which feels strange but reflects the technology's uncertainty.

Common LBW myths

  • ‘You can't be LBW outside the line of off stump.’ Wrong if you weren't offering a shot — leaving a delivery doesn't protect you.
  • ‘Hitting the pad first means you're safe.’ Not relevant — the test is whether the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps, not what it hit first.
  • ‘LBW can't happen first ball.’ Wrong — first-ball LBWs are a regular feature of all formats.
  • ‘Spinners get more LBWs than fast bowlers.’ Mostly true, especially with finger spinners targeting the stumps with the arm-ball.

Frequently asked questions

Can you be LBW from a no-ball?

No. A no-ball cancels the dismissal — the batter cannot be out LBW (or bowled, caught, or stumped) off a no-ball. The only way to be out off a no-ball is run-out, obstruction, or handling the ball.

What does 'umpire's call' mean in DRS?

Umpire's call applies when the ball-tracking projection is within the ICC's accepted margin of error — currently half a ball — of either the impact zone or the stumps. The original on-field decision stands unchanged.

Can you be LBW outside the line of off stump?
