The 1992 World Cup

Martin Crowe captained New Zealand at the 1992 ODI World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, scoring 456 runs — the most by any player in the tournament. He introduced innovative tactics including pinch-hitting openers and off-spin from the first over, influencing how modern ODI cricket is played.

Test Batting Masterclass

Crowe's technique was considered textbook — side-on, balanced, with an exceptional eye for spin bowling. He scored 17 Test centuries, with his 299 against Sri Lanka in 1991 frustratingly falling just short of 300 when he ran himself out.

Legacy

Martin Crowe was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame in 2010. He died in March 2016 after a battle with cancer, having spent his final years designing Twenty20 cricket's 'Cricket Max' format and mentoring New Zealand's next generation. The Crowe Medal is New Zealand cricket's top individual award.
