Matheesha Pathirana is Sri Lanka's most exciting young fast bowler — a right-arm pace bowler with a distinctive, low, slingy bowling action that produces steeply angled deliveries at high pace. Born on 12 August 2003, he quickly attracted comparisons to the great Lasith Malinga due to his similar round-arm, low-trajectory action.

The Slingy Action

Pathirana's bowling action is immediately recognisable: he delivers the ball from a very low arm angle — almost round-arm — producing a ball that arrives at the batter on a steep, low trajectory rather than the more conventional high release point. This makes the ball extremely difficult to pick up and to play off the back foot, especially at the death when yorkers and low full-tosses become devastating.

Pace and Yorkers
