Left-Arm Lightning
Mitchell Aaron Starc (born 1990, Balgowlah, New South Wales) is the fastest left-arm bowler in contemporary cricket, regularly touching 93-95 mph and occasionally above. His left-arm angle — angling in to right-handed batters then swinging away, or swinging sharply back in — creates a unique difficulty that right-handers find harder to adjust to than right-arm bowling. In 75+ Tests he has taken over 350 wickets at an average under 27 — exceptional for a left-arm pace bowler.
The World Cup Yorker
Starc is the most dangerous ODI death bowler of his era. His in-swinging yorker at 90+ mph, angling into the feet of right-handed batters, is the delivery batters most fear. In the 2015 World Cup (hosted jointly by Australia and New Zealand) he was Player of the Tournament, taking 22 wickets. In the final against New Zealand he bowled Brendon McCullum with the very first ball of the innings. In the 2019 World Cup he took 27 wickets. His ODI wicket tally is over 225 at under 24 — one of the best ODI bowling records by any Australian bowler.
Test Career: Inconsistent But Match-Winning
Starc's Test record reflects a bowler who is either devastating (6+ wickets in a match) or expensive on flat pitches when the ball doesn't swing. His home average in Australia (where the Kookaburra swing is inconsistent) is higher than his overseas average in England (where the Dukes ball swings more). His best overseas performance came at Old Trafford in the 2023 Ashes when he took 10 wickets in the match to level the series at 1-1.
Relationship with Pat Cummins
Starc and Cummins form Australia's most feared new-ball partnership since Lillee and Thomson. Cummins from the right at pace and seam; Starc from the left with swing and pace. For right-handed batters, they create a situation where covering one bowler's line leaves them exposed to the other's. Their partnership has taken over 500 wickets in Tests between them.
