Pakistan were granted Test status in 1952 — just five years after partition from India. In the seven decades since, they have produced some of cricket's greatest players, won the 1992 World Cup, hosted the 2009 terrorist attack that banned international cricket from the country for a decade, and slowly rebuilt to welcome the world again.
Early history
Pakistan played their first Test in October 1952 against India in Delhi. They won their first Test in January 1955 against India in Lucknow. From the beginning, Pakistan produced fast bowlers of exceptional quality — a tradition that continues with Shaheen Afridi today.
Golden age — the 1970s-1990s
Pakistan's greatest era produced Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Javed Miandad, Zaheer Abbas, and Inzamam-ul-Haq. They won the 1992 World Cup under Imran Khan. They beat the West Indies in the Caribbean and England in England. Javed Miandad's last-ball six off Chetan Sharma vs India (1986) remains one of cricket's most dramatic finishes.
2009 Lahore attack
On March 3, 2009, gunmen attacked the Sri Lanka cricket team bus in Lahore. Six Pakistan police officers and two civilians were killed; several Sri Lanka players were injured including Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara. International cricket was immediately suspended in Pakistan. The ban lasted until 2019.
PSL — Pakistan Super League
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) was founded in 2016 and has become one of the world's most popular T20 franchises competitions. It has been crucial in re-establishing Pakistan as a cricket destination. Teams include Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Peshawar Zalmi, Islamabad United, Multan Sultans, and Quetta Gladiators.
Modern Pakistan cricket
