Pakistan's Cricket Homecoming
The Pakistan Super League was founded in 2015 and first played in 2016. Initially staged entirely in the United Arab Emirates due to security concerns following the 2009 Lahore attacks on the Sri Lankan team's bus, the PSL has progressively returned cricket to Pakistan — with full tournaments held in Pakistan from 2020 onwards. The league has six franchises: Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Lahore Qalandars, Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi and Quetta Gladiators.
Franchise Teams and Titles
Islamabad United won the inaugural PSL in 2016 and have been consistent performers since. Lahore Qalandars won their first PSL title in 2022 after years of near-misses, generating huge celebrations in the city. Peshawar Zalmi, with Shahid Afridi as captain in its early years, has a particularly passionate fanbase. The franchise model creates intense city rivalries that have re-engaged Pakistani cricket fans, particularly the young.
International Player Participation
The PSL has attracted numerous international stars — West Indian power hitters, Australian all-rounders, English batsmen and South African pace bowlers have all featured. The competition provides Pakistan's emerging players with regular exposure to high-quality international team-mates and opponents. Many players have used the PSL to earn international contracts — the league has become an effective pathway to the Pakistan national team.
Cricket's Return to Lahore and Karachi
The full return of international cricket to Pakistan was symbolised by PSL matches at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and National Stadium in Karachi drawing enormous crowds. Pakistan had been unable to host international matches from 2009 to 2019 due to security concerns. PSL's success in managing security and restoring a festive cricket atmosphere paved the way for international tours to resume. Today, Pakistan is once again a destination on the international cricket calendar.
