PSL — Pakistan Super League Explained

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) is Pakistan's premier T20 franchise cricket competition, launched in 2016 and now firmly established as one of the top domestic T20 leagues in the world. The PSL has been instrumental in revitalising cricket in Pakistan, attracting international stars, and providing a clear development pathway for Pakistan's emerging players.

The Six PSL Franchises

• Islamabad United — most successful PSL team, multiple title winners
• Lahore Qalandars — consistent performers and crowd favourites
• Karachi Kings — fan base in Pakistan's largest city
• Peshawar Zalmi — strong performer in early editions
• Quetta Gladiators — 2019 PSL champions

Format

The PSL runs in February–March, fitting between the international schedules. Six teams play a double round-robin qualifying stage, followed by playoffs and a final. Initially held partly in the UAE due to security concerns, the PSL gradually returned to Pakistani cities. By 2020, the PSL was played entirely in Pakistan — including the landmark Lahore final — signalling international cricket's return to Pakistan.

Impact on Pakistani Cricket

The PSL has transformed Pakistan's domestic cricket landscape. Before the PSL, Pakistani players had limited franchise T20 experience. The competition has produced stars like Shadab Khan, Fakhar Zaman, and Hasan Ali — all of whom emerged as household names through PSL performances before becoming T20 World Cup stalwarts. The PSL also attracts top international players including English, Australian, West Indian, and South African stars.
