Punjab Kings — IPL's Entertaining but Trophy-Less Franchise

From Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings

Punjab Kings were originally named Kings XI Punjab and were one of the eight founding franchises of the IPL in 2008. The franchise was rebranded as 'Punjab Kings' in 2021. Based in Mohali (and playing some matches in Dharamsala), PBKS have consistently been one of the IPL's most entertaining teams — but have never won the title despite reaching the final in 2014.

The 2014 Near-Miss

Punjab Kings' best IPL season came in 2014 under George Bailey's captaincy, when the team reached the final before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders. Virender Sehwag's explosive batting at the top of the order and a strong support cast made them one of the most dangerous batting sides in that edition, but the title eluded them.

Batting Heritage

PBKS have traditionally been associated with explosive batting. Over the years, players like Chris Gayle (who has hit more IPL sixes for PBKS than anyone), Adam Gilchrist, David Miller, and more recently Shikhar Dhawan have led their batting. The franchise's attacking approach has made them crowd favourites even without the title.

Dharamsala — The Mountain Cricket Ground

Punjab Kings play some home matches at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, one of cricket's most spectacular venues set against the backdrop of the Dhauladhar mountain range. The ground's unique setting makes it a favourite among players and fans, even if the altitude and conditions present unusual challenges.
