Ranji Trophy — India's Premier Domestic First-Class Competition

The Ranji Trophy is India's premier domestic first-class cricket competition, named after Prince Ranjitsinhji (K.S. Ranjitsinhji), the legendary batsman who represented both Sussex and England. The tournament has been played since 1934–35 and is contested by 38 teams representing India's states and union territories. Performing well in the Ranji Trophy remains the most important measure of a domestic Indian cricketer's quality.

Format and Structure

The Ranji Trophy is played in a multi-stage format. Teams are divided into Elite groups and a Plate group. Elite Group A and Group B play a round-robin stage, with the top teams advancing to knockout quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final. All matches are played over four days (first-class format), and BCCI awards points on the same basis as county cricket — with bonus points for batting and bowling performances.

• Mumbai (formerly Bombay): most titles in history — over 40 Ranji trophies
• Karnataka: multiple titles, consistent performers since 2000s
• Delhi: strong record through the 1970s–90s
• Railways: regular performers, strong in knockout rounds
• Vidarbha: back-to-back champions in 2017–18 and 2018–19

Ranji Trophy as a Talent Pipeline

The Ranji Trophy is the primary feeder competition for the Indian national team. BCCI selectors monitor Ranji performances closely, and consistent four-day form is almost always required before a player is considered for Test selection. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, and virtually every great Indian Test player built their credentials through the Ranji Trophy first.
