Ravichandran Ashwin: India's Greatest Modern Spinner

Ravichandran Ashwin is arguably the greatest off-spinner India has ever produced and one of the finest Test bowlers of his generation. Combining classical off-spin with a carrom ball, a top-spinner, and an unusually intelligent cricket brain, he accumulated wickets at a remarkable rate in home conditions and demonstrated he could compete in the most challenging overseas environments too.

Ashwin reached 500 Test wickets faster than any bowler in history, achieving the milestone in 98 Tests. He retired from international cricket in January 2025 — after a T20 World Cup win against South Africa in 2024 — with 537 Test wickets at 24.00, making him India's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests behind Anil Kumble's 619. His numbers in Indian conditions were extraordinary, regularly returning five-wicket hauls against the best batting line-ups in the world.

Variations and Intelligence

Where many off-spinners rely principally on the standard delivery that turns from off to leg, Ashwin developed an extensive arsenal. His carrom ball — flicked out of the index and middle fingers — spun the opposite way and deceived even experienced batters who expected the off-break. He also bowled a quicker arm ball, a top-spinner, and a well-disguised googly. Each delivery was deployed with clear tactical intent.

Batting Contributions

Ashwin was also a genuine lower-middle-order batter, scoring 6 Test centuries including two scores above 100 against England at home. He averaged over 25 with the bat in Tests — exceptional for a specialist spinner — and often rescued India with important lower-order partnerships. In one famous Ashes-era series against England in 2021-22, he scored vital runs when India's top order struggled.
