Required run rate (RRR) is the live number every fan watches when a team is chasing a target. It tells you exactly how fast the batting side must score — runs per over — from this ball onwards to win the match. When RRR is comfortably below a team's usual scoring pace, the chase looks easy. When it spikes above 12 or 15, the chase is nearly impossible. Understanding RRR is the single fastest way to read whether a run chase is on track.

RRR is recalculated after every ball. If the batting team hits a six, the numerator (runs needed) drops by six and the denominator (overs remaining) drops by 1/6 of an over, so the RRR falls sharply. If they play a dot ball, the runs needed stays the same but the overs remaining falls, pushing the RRR up.

How DLS affects the required total
When rain interrupts a match during the second innings, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method revises the target. The new target is set based on the resources (balls and wickets) the batting team has remaining vs what they had at the equivalent point of the first innings. Once DLS sets a revised target, the RRR is recalculated against that new number from the overs still available. A team might find their revised target is 40 runs from 4 overs — an RRR of 10 — even though the original target looked far easier.

In Test cricket and ODIs the benchmarks are lower. A Test chase with an RRR above 4.5 on the final day is already very difficult; the record successful chase (England vs Australia at Headingley, 2019) required an RRR of around 5.7 across 167.5 overs. In ODIs an RRR above 8 heading into the last 10 overs generally signals a losing position.
Why RRR spikes at the death
Teams that bat conservatively in the powerplay often find themselves in a death-overs crisis. If a team needs 100 from 10 overs (RRR 10) but then hit only 30 from the next 5 overs, they suddenly need 70 from 5 overs (RRR 14). Each set of dot balls or single-run overs compounds the problem because there are fewer overs left to recover. This exponential pressure is why experienced batters try to keep RRR roughly flat — scoring at or slightly above it — rather than letting it mount.
