Captain Who Never Lost a Series

Richie Benaud captained Australia in 28 Tests from 1958 to 1964 — and did not lose a single series. This record made him one of the most successful Test captains in history. He led Australia to retain the Ashes in England in 1961, famous for the Old Trafford Test where he took 6/70 bowling round the wicket into the rough outside left-handers' off stump to skittle England and win the match from an apparently losing position.

The Leg-Spinner's Art

Benaud was the second Australian bowler to take 200 Test wickets, finishing with 248 at 27.03. He was a classical leg-spinner who also deployed the wrong'un and a sharp flipper, and he was particularly effective in attacking fields where other captains would have tightened up. His attacking instincts as captain — taking the new ball himself, bringing on spinners early, setting attacking fields when logic suggested caution — became a template for Australian cricket leadership.

The Voice of Cricket

After retiring, Benaud became the most distinctive commentating voice in the sport's history. He worked in commentary for over 40 years, principally for the BBC and Channel Nine in Australia. His style — precise, unhurried, economical — became a standard. He believed in letting the pictures tell the story and resisting the temptation to fill every silence. 'Morning everyone' was his opening greeting on the BBC that became a catchphrase. He died in 2015, and his passing was mourned across the entire cricket world.
