Ricky Ponting: Australia's Greatest Captain and Batter

Ricky Ponting is arguably Australia's greatest cricketer. As a batter he finished with 13,378 Test runs and 71 international centuries. As captain he won two World Cups and led Australia through the most dominant era in Test cricket history.

Early life and debut

Born on December 19, 1974, in Launceston, Tasmania, Ponting was scouted as a 10-year-old prodigy by former Australian wicketkeeper Rod Marsh. He made his Test debut in 1995 and his ODI debut in 1995 as well. He was initially seen as a maverick but matured into the most complete batter of his generation.

World Cup glory

Ponting starred in Australia's 1999 World Cup winning campaign as a batter under Steve Waugh's captaincy. He then captained Australia to the 2003 World Cup title — in which Australia were unbeaten — and the 2007 World Cup title. He is the only captain to win three consecutive World Cup titles (including as part of Steve Waugh's 1999 squad).

Captaincy record

Ponting captained Australia in 77 Tests, winning 48 — a win percentage of 62.3%. He led Australia to 9 consecutive Ashes wins between 2001 and 2006 but was then captained on the receiving end of England's 2005 comeback. He lost the 2005 and 2009 Ashes series to England.

• 140* in the 2003 World Cup Final vs India, Man of the Match
• 257 vs India in Melbourne (2003/04) — one of the great Test innings
• 196 vs Pakistan in Perth — scored at under 3.3 minutes per run
• 9th on the all-time Test runs list at the time of retirement

Retirement and legacy

Ponting retired from international cricket in December 2012 after his 168th Test match. He was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2018. He now commentates extensively on Australian cricket and is regarded as among the three or four greatest batters in history.
