Rod Marsh's name is inseparable from Dennis Lillee's — the 'Lillee c Marsh b Lillee' dismissal appeared 95 times in their Test careers together, a world record for a wicketkeeper-bowler combination that still stands. The combination was more than statistical: Marsh and Lillee were kindred spirits — competitive, aggressive, and perfectly attuned to each other's rhythms. Marsh was often seen as the heartbeat of the Australian dressing room, as vocal and passionate off the field as he was expert on it.

355 Test Dismissals

Marsh kept wicket in 96 Tests from 1970 to 1984, making 355 dismissals — 343 catches and 12 stumpings. He also scored 3,633 Test runs at 26.51, including three centuries, making him a genuine lower-order batting asset for Australia as well. His keeping was known for its security rather than its flamboyance — he was extraordinarily reliable, rarely putting chances down, and his hands were particularly soft for a keeper of his era.

Legacy and Administration

After retiring, Marsh became a hugely influential figure in cricket administration. He ran the Australian Cricket Academy and later the National Academy in England, and was widely credited with identifying and developing numerous future Test cricketers. He was also deeply controversial for signing for World Series Cricket in 1977, which led to a temporary rift with official Australian cricket before reconciliation. Marsh died in March 2022 — the same day as Shane Warne, in what felt like an impossible coincidence — and was mourned across the cricketing world.
