Run Chase Strategy in Cricket — How Teams Hunt a Target

Chasing a target is one of the most tactically rich scenarios in cricket. Unlike setting a score, the chasing team knows exactly what they need from ball one — and must constantly balance the twin demands of scoring fast enough and keeping enough wickets in hand to finish the job.
The Required Run Rate
The Required Run Rate (RRR) is the run-scoring rate the batting team must maintain from that point forward to win. It is calculated as: RRR = runs needed ÷ overs remaining. If a team needs 120 runs from 15 overs, their RRR is 8.0 — they need 8 runs per over. As the chase progresses, if the team falls behind, the RRR climbs; if they stay ahead, it drops. Wickets in Hand
The most important resource in a chase is wickets. A team with 8 wickets in hand and 20 overs to go is in a far stronger position than a team with 3 wickets and the same run requirement. Wickets allow the chase to accelerate later — the captain can afford to have lower-order hitters come in and swing freely. Losing wickets early forces caution because there is no safety net.
Pacing a Chase by Format
- T20 Chase: With only 20 overs, the margin for error is tiny. Teams typically aim to use the Powerplay (overs 1–6) to get ahead of the rate, then consolidate briefly before a final assault in overs 15–20. A T20 chase of 180+ usually requires scoring at 9+ runs per over — batter-friendly, aggressive from ball one.
- ODI Chase (50 overs): Standard approach is to build a platform in overs 1–10 (3–5 runs per over), consolidate in the middle overs, and accelerate through the back-end Powerplay (overs 41–50). The batting Powerplay (5 overs, fielding restrictions) used strategically is often the pivot.
- Test Chase: Unique in that time as well as runs matters. Teams must consider whether a draw is achievable if the run rate becomes unrealistic. The 2019 Headingley Test where England chased 359 on day 5 is considered one of the great chasing performances.
The Psychology of Chasing
Research and team data consistently show that teams win more often when batting second in limited-overs cricket. Having a visible, known target removes uncertainty.
