Sachin Tendulkar: 100 International Centuries and Cricket's Greatest Record

When Sachin Tendulkar retired from cricket in November 2013, he left behind statistics that no player had approached before and few are likely to approach again: 15,921 Test runs, 18,426 ODI runs, 51 Test centuries, 49 ODI centuries, 100 international centuries total. In India, cricket's largest market, he was not merely an athlete but a cultural icon whose influence on the game extended beyond records.

The Debut at 16

Tendulkar made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi in November 1989 at just 16 years and 205 days old. He faced Waqar Younis at his most fearsome and was hit on the nose by a bouncer. He refused to retire hurt, continued batting, and showed the mental steel that would define his career. He scored 15 on debut but the manner of his resistance signalled something extraordinary.

The ODI First — 200 Not Out

On 24 February 2010, Tendulkar became the first batsman ever to score 200 not out in an ODI, against South Africa in Gwalior. He faced 147 balls and hit 25 fours and 3 sixes. The achievement was so unprecedented that the entire cricket world stopped to absorb it. The record showed Tendulkar's capacity for historical moments even late in his career.

World Cup 2011 — The Dream Fulfilled

The one major trophy missing from Tendulkar's collection was a World Cup winner's medal. India had last won in 1983. In 2011, on home soil, India won the World Cup — with Tendulkar carried on the shoulders of his teammates around the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MS Dhoni's six off Nuwan Kulasekara to win the final is one of cricket's most iconic moments. Tendulkar wept.

The 100th Century

The 100th international century was perhaps the most anticipated individual milestone in cricket history. After reaching 99 centuries, Tendulkar endured a tense wait of over a year before completing the century against Bangladesh in an Asia Cup match on 16 March 2012. The relief and joy were palpable; the cricketing world exhaled with him.

Legacy and Influence

Tendulkar's influence on cricket is incalculable. He inspired an entire generation of Indian batsmen including Virat Kohli, who has spoken of watching Tendulkar as a child. The IPL — the commercial revolution that transformed cricket economics — was partly possible because of the massive Indian market that Tendulkar helped develop. In 2014 he became the youngest person to receive India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
