On 22 February 2003 at Newlands in Cape Town, Shoaib Akhtar bowled a delivery measured at 161.3 km/h (100.2 mph) against England in the ICC Cricket World Cup. The speed was measured by the ICC's official speed gun and is the fastest officially recorded delivery in international cricket. The record displaced Brett Lee's previous mark of 159.5 km/h and remains in the record books despite modern debate about speed-gun consistency across eras.

Bowling Style and Technique

Akhtar's pace came from an unusual high-leaping action with a significant body rotation. He was not tall (5'11" — short for a fast bowler) but generated enormous pace through his action's timing and rhythm. He bowled both outswing and inswing at high pace, making him dangerous with the new ball, and was capable of the short delivery that climbed at a pace batters rarely faced. His action was suspected of being questionable (illegal degree of elbow bend), and he was twice suspended for action concerns before being cleared after bio-mechanical testing.
