T10 Cricket: The Fastest Format in the Game

T10 cricket is the shortest format of the game, with each side facing just 10 overs, producing matches that last approximately 90 minutes in total. First played professionally in 2017 with the launch of the Abu Dhabi T10 League, it represents cricket's most extreme attempt to condense the sport into a tight, entertainment-focused package.

How T10 Works

In T10, each team faces exactly 10 overs. Bowling restrictions limit each bowler to a maximum of two overs per innings. There is typically a two-over powerplay during which fielding restrictions apply. The entire match fits within 90 minutes, with each innings lasting around 40-45 minutes, making it feasible for evening broadcast slots and markets where cricket is competing for attention with other entertainment.

The Abu Dhabi T10 League

The Abu Dhabi T10 League (now known as the International League T10) is the flagship competition. It attracts some of the world's biggest names in T20 cricket — Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Kieron Pollard, Shoaib Akhtar, among others have featured. The league is ICC-sanctioned, meaning players can participate without jeopardising their international cricket eligibility.

Tactical Considerations

T10 cricket demands immediate aggression. Batters cannot afford any period of consolidation — every ball must be attacked. Teams with the most power hitters in their top order hold the greatest advantage. Bowlers who can bowl yorkers and restrict in the death overs have unusual value, as the death bowling phase begins as early as overs seven through ten.
