Touring the Subcontinent: A Guide to Cricket in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka
Touring India, Pakistan or Sri Lanka is the hardest assignment in Test cricket. Spin, heat, turning pitches, massive crowds, and conditions that reverse every advantage a pace-heavy attack brings.
Why the Subcontinent is Different
When England, Australia or South Africa tour the Indian subcontinent, they enter conditions where almost every competitive advantage they rely on at home disappears. Their pace bowlers find pitches that offer little assistance. The spinners in their squads may have minimal experience of the degree of turn and bounce they face. Their batsmen must contend with heat, dust, slow outfields and spin bowling of a quality and variety rarely encountered in their domestic cricket. The subcontinent — India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka combined — has the best record of any region in the world in home Tests for a reason.
The Pitches
Subcontinental pitches are generally drier than those in England or Australia, prepared to favour spin from early in the match, and deteriorate sharply over five days. The Chepauk in Chennai, the Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi, the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the SSC in Colombo are all pitches that have been prepared specifically to maximise the advantage of local spinners. The ball turns from day one or two. By day four and five, balls are rising at varying heights and going in different directions on every delivery. Teams that rely on pace and swing at home must reinvent themselves entirely.
The Heat and Conditions
Cricket in India during winter (November to February) is manageable. Cricket in India during summer or the monsoon margins — September, October — is not. Humidity in Chennai or Colombo can reach 90%. Temperatures in Kanpur or Lahore in October can exceed 38°C (100°F). Players lose kilograms of body weight in a single session. Fielding sides wilt. Bowlers find 10-over spells physically exhausting. Visiting teams must acclimatise rigorously, manage rest periods, and manage hydration at a level unfamiliar from their home conditions.
Spin: The Main Weapon
The subcontinent produces the world's best spinners partly because of these conditions. Muttiah Muralitharan took 800 Test wickets, with a substantial proportion at home. Anil Kumble took 619. Ravichandran Ashwin has been consistently the most destructive spinner in the world over the past decade. Against visiting teams, subcontinental spinners bowl on pitches prepared for them, in front of crowds who create noise that disrupts batting rhythm, with turn, bounce and drift that visiting batsmen encounter twice a year at most. The match-up is structurally unfair in the host's favour.
Historic Batting Heroes on Tour
A small number of touring batsmen have succeeded consistently on the subcontinent and they are universally admired for it. Rahul Dravid averaged 52.31 in Tests but his sub-continental numbers are higher still because he grew up learning to play spin. Among visiting batsmen, Kevin Pietersen's 186 in Mumbai in 2012 stands out as one of the finest innings played by a visiting player in India in modern times. Eoin Morgan's development of the sweep and reverse sweep as a primary weapon was partly driven by the need to negate quality spin — he identified the horizontal bat as the equaliser.
Team Selection on Tour
Successful touring teams carry specialist spin bowling, and they select batsmen who play spin well. England's decision under Bazball to play aggressive cricket in Pakistan in 2022 — sweeping and using feet to the spinners — worked precisely because it denied Pakistani spinners their natural rhythm. A conservative defensive approach against quality spin generally fails; the pressure builds, wickets fall in clusters, and the innings collapses without anyone bowling a poor delivery. Modern subcontinent touring strategy is built on intent: disrupt the spinners before they settle.
The Reverse Swing Factor
Pakistani conditions — dry, abrasive pitches that roughen the ball quickly — have historically produced the best reverse swing bowling in the world. Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis developed the art of reverse swing at its highest level on these pitches. The ball swings late in the opposite direction to conventional swing when the rough side faces the airflow, and the movement is pronounced, fast and late. Even on flat pitches, a well-bowled reverse swinging delivery at 140km/h is virtually unplayable. Visiting teams touring Pakistan who have not prepared for reverse swing often find themselves dismissed by deliveries they cannot read.
