Cricket in the USA — History, Growth and the Road to the T20 World Cup

Cricket has a longer history in the United States than most people realise. The first recorded cricket match on American soil took place as early as 1709 in Virginia, and by the mid-19th century the US was one of the strongest cricket nations in the world. The famous 1844 USA vs Canada match — the first international cricket fixture in history, predating the first cricket Test by 33 years — drew a crowd of 5,000 in New York.

The Rise and Fall of Early American Cricket

Through the 1850s and 1860s, American cricket was vibrant. English touring sides visited regularly, and cities like Philadelphia, New York, and Boston had strong club scenes. Philadelphian cricketers were particularly skilled — the Gentlemen of Philadelphia toured England several times and competed respectably against county sides.

The American Civil War (1861–1865) disrupted sporting life dramatically. When the nation recovered, baseball — simpler to learn, faster to play, and more suited to an industrialising society — had captured the national imagination. Cricket retreated into immigrant communities, largely British and Caribbean expats, and never recovered mainstream status.

The Caribbean Diaspora and Modern Revival

Caribbean immigration in the 20th century sustained cricket in the eastern United States, particularly in New York, New Jersey, and Florida. Leagues thrived in these communities through the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s, though the sport remained invisible to mainstream American audiences.

The ICC granted USA Full Associate Member status in 2019, clearing the path for proper international cricket. The real turning point came with the formation of Major League Cricket (MLC) in 2023 — a franchise T20 league backed by Indian-American investors and featuring international stars. MLC brought live cricket to US television and established professional infrastructure.

2024 T20 World Cup — A Watershed Moment

The 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup was co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies. Matches were played at New York's Nassau County International Cricket Stadium — a temporary 34,000-seat venue constructed specifically for the event — and at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

The USA also played competitive cricket in the group stages. Though the team did not advance to the Super 8 round, the tournament established cricket as a growing sport in American public consciousness and attracted major sponsorship interest.
