Waqar Younis: Career Overview

Waqar Younis is a Pakistani right-arm fast bowler born on 16 November 1971 in Vehari, Punjab. Alongside Wasim Akram, he formed one of the most celebrated bowling partnerships in cricket history, with both bowlers mastering the art of reverse swing to devastating effect. Waqar took 373 Test wickets at 23.56 — the sixth-highest wicket-taker in Test history at the time of his retirement.

Reverse Swing Mastery

Waqar Younis's defining skill was his mastery of reverse swing with the old ball. When conventional new-ball swing is no longer available, the ball can reverse — moving in the opposite direction to normal swing when bowled at high pace with the shiny side facing the right direction. Waqar was able to generate late, sharp reverse swing at pace, producing inswinging yorkers to right-handed batters from around the wicket that were almost impossible to play. He was one of the most destructive death-overs bowlers of his era, capable of taking lower-order wickets in clusters.

Partnership with Wasim Akram

The Wasim-Waqar partnership ranks among the greatest bowling combinations in Test history. While Wasim attacked from one end with swing and cutters, Waqar generated pace and reverse swing from the other. Together they took over 600 Test wickets as a partnership and helped Pakistan become one of the most feared Test sides of the 1990s. Waqar later served as Pakistan's head coach and bowling mentor.
