Waqar Younis: The Master of Reverse Swing
How Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram reinvented fast bowling by weaponising reverse swing — making the old ball more dangerous than the new.
The Discovery of Reverse Swing
Reverse swing — the phenomenon where an old, rough ball swings in the opposite direction to conventional swing — was not invented by Waqar Younis, but he perfected it as a weapon. The mechanics: a conventional cricket ball swings toward the rough side when new; as it ages (after 30–40 overs) and the seam wears, the ball can be held with the rough side facing out — at which point the air pressure differential reverses, and the ball swings sharply in the opposite direction to what the batsman expects. Pakistan's groundsmen and Pakistani players discovered and refined this technique systematically through the 1980s. By the time Waqar arrived in international cricket in 1989, reverse swing at high pace was a documented technique. What Waqar did was deploy it at genuinely fast pace — 90mph+ — making the late movement impossible to manage.
The Deadly Toe-Crusher
Waqar's specific variation — a full-length delivery that reversed at the last moment into the batsman's feet — became his signature. At full pace, with the ball moving late under the bat, it was virtually unplayable. His Test record: 373 wickets at 23.56, the lowest average of any bowler with 350+ Test wickets in the pace-bowling category. His ODI record: 416 wickets at 23.84 — the third most by any ODI bowler. But statistics undersell the impact: Waqar bowled the reverse-swinging yorker with such consistency that batsmen simply could not set up a shot to counter it. The ball moved too late, too quickly, and too accurately.
Wasim and Waqar: The Perfect Partnership
The Wasim Akram-Waqar Younis new-ball partnership was the most feared in cricket history. Wasim: left-arm, swinging the new ball either way at genuine pace, with the fastest inswinging yorker of any left-arm bowler. Waqar: right-arm, the reverse-swinging late-game specialist. Together they attacked from both ends with both conventional and reverse swing; no batsman could settle into a pattern against one while ignoring the other. They took 572 combined Test wickets. Their 1992–93 series against England in Pakistan produced one of cricket's most sustained periods of fast bowling excellence: England's batsmen averaged 19 across the series against the two of them.
Ball Tampering Controversies
Pakistan's mastery of reverse swing brought sustained accusations of ball tampering — deliberately roughing one side of the ball to accelerate the reverse effect. In 1992, Pakistan were penalised five runs in an ODI against England for ball interference. In 2018, the Steve Smith-led Australia team were caught using sandpaper on the ball in South Africa — a scandal that ended three careers. The nuance: there is a legitimate version of reverse swing (maintaining the ball lawfully, allowing natural deterioration) and an illegal version (scratching, using foreign substances). Pakistan's best bowlers insisted they used legitimate methods; the controversy followed them regardless. The ICC eventually strengthened ball-inspection protocols and anti-tampering regulations in the 2010s.
Legacy and the Modern Reverse Swing Masters
The Wasim-Waqar partnership's reverse swing mastery was absorbed into the global coaching curriculum. James Anderson of England — 700+ Test wickets, the most by any pace bowler in history — identified learning reverse swing as the transformation point of his career, extending his potency into his mid-30s when pace declined. Stuart Broad used it similarly. Dale Steyn of South Africa combined conventional swing, reverse swing, and raw pace with Waqar-like effectiveness. In India, Zaheer Khan was the first genuinely world-class reverse swing practitioner in Test cricket. The technique went from Pakistani secret to global standard in 25 years — primarily because Waqar demonstrated what was possible at the highest level.
